These “gingerbread houses” still exist - at Lane 750 Yuyuan Road (愚园路750弄). Originally known as Yu Yuen Estate, now 愚园新村, the project was developed in 1930 by G. Among its many original insights, this article by Duncan Hewitt, on the corporate history of Brunner Mond & ICI (卜内门洋行) in Shanghai, shows unique old and contemporary photos of the International Settlement. A friend pointed out this wonderful video footage from 1928, which shows the wedding of Charlotte Berkin and William Simpson in Shanghai. The Gardenia cabaret, at 1389 Yuyuan Road (愚园路1389号), opened in 1937 by Alexandr Vertinsky, is undergoing complete gutting that may be followed by its demolition. The glass terrace of the Hunan restaurant that used to cover up the original facade is gone, and now you can see the resemblance to the only existing photograph of Gardenia:
